I read a lot of mainstream Marvel and DC titles each week. I think my pull list is close to 15 titles per month, although I have added some titles recently, so the count is defiantly up. I enjoy scanning the shelves for new titles to read. I’m mostly pulled in by the cover art or if I’m familiar with an artist/writer, I’ll give the book a chance.
I think we can all agree that Grant Morrison is a phenomenal storyteller. If you’ve not familiar with his early 2000’s X-Men run, order it immediately. That’s where I was first introduced to his work and why I picked up PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD from my local comic shop. Like my streaming shows, I like to binge comics. I waited to read PROCTOR VALLEY ROAD straight through. I’m glad I did!
Set in 1970, Chula Vista, California during the Vietnam War, the story takes us on a journey of four high school aged girls. Each from a different walk of life, brought into a twisted and haunted tale because they want money to go see Janis Joplin perform live.
What hooked me was the diversification of characters. Morrison knows how to juggle multiple characters’ individual storyline, while still growing and evolving the main plot. Not a lot of writers do that well. After reading through three issues, I kew all the characters well, their drive and their purpose to whole unit. It made me want more.
The mini series is only five issues which makes the story an easy read leaving a memorable impact. Give it a chance. It’s hauntingly good.
