I love a good alternate-reality storyline in comics. You know two things going in to it. Everything will be upside down from what you think you know AND the characters are going to get new costumes!
It’s the new costumes that really excites me. That’s one of the main reasons I love the X-Men’s, alternate-reality storyline, The Age of Apocalypse. Teased with gritty promo ads and ominous messaging, fans knew something BIG and unseen was coming in the next few months.
Kitty Pryde is one character that, in my opinion, got one of the BEST redesigns in costuming and persona. I think having Chris Bachalo and Scott Lobdell on the book was another factor that pulled me in. Before the timeline change, the two were off and running, creating Generation X for Marvel. This reimagine of the team early on in the development of their storyline, gave fans a new appreciation for the world being created in both worlds.
During The Age of Apocalypse, Kitty was back with the X-Men, married to Colossus and leading Magneto’s next generation of young mutants in the title, GENERATION NEXT. As for her appearance, our once long, dark-haired genius was transformed into a short-haired fearless leader who wielded three-claw gauntlet weapons on each wrist. The claws were very much like those of Wolverine, her mentor in our timeline and this one.
It’s not too often that Kitty’s training by Wolverine is addressed or acknowledged anymore. He trained her to be a ninja-like fighter in our regular timeline. In this one, he trained her to be an assassin.
Needless to say when this new wave of Marvel Legends action figures was announced I was ecstatic. I could actually say I have been waiting my whole life for this figure. The Age of Apocalypse’s Kitty Pryde was being made and I had to have. I had to have them all. As we all know the distribution of product has been off-kilter to say the least, but she’s here and I’m like a kid in a candy store.
In this Marvel Legends wave, our Build-A-Figure (BAF) is Age of Apocalypse Colossus, Kitty’s main man. Kitty’s packaging includes the torso piece. As of late, some of the BAF characters, to me, have been boring or out of touch with the wave they have been associated with. Building Colossus makes sense for not only relevance but also figure and character size. Each character in this new wave has an essential piece to building this big boy, so make sure you collect them all!
Not to discredit this amazing release, but I can’t help but look at this costume and sculpt and think, this could easily be customized into Lady Mastermind. I mean, I’m not going to attempt because that is one skill I do not have, but for those of you that do, do it!
