Enter Morbius! We all know Jared Leto doesn’t disappoint. Say what you want about his role as The Joker in the Suicide Squad, but we saw how dynamic he can be in that role during the end credit scene of this year’s Justice League Snyder Cut.
He’s going to be phenomenal. The MORBIUS trailer already proves that. The real enigma surrounding Morbius is where does this fit into the bigger Marvel Universe picture.
Although the character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 (October 1971), the character has played a bigger role outside of Spidey’s comic pages. When the Morbius solo film was first announced with little to no information, I saw a lot of chatter online about this being the entry into Marvel’s Midnight Sons cluster of characters. It makes sense, right?
Marvel’s Midnight Sons
For those unfamiliar with Marvel’s Midnight Sons, in a nutshell, this early ’90s group of characters make up Marvel’s supernatural world which include classic characters such as Hellstrom, Morbius, Werewolf by Night, Doctor Strange, and Ghost Riders Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze.
With talks of Blade coming back into the cinematic spotlight, this made more sense. To top it off, there are rumblings of Marvel planning something new with Werewolf by Night.
Dark magic, like the Darkhold, Ghost Rider in Agents of SHIELD, and Hellstrom from the Hulu original series are already in play in the Marvel cinematic universe. However, as we all know, fan speculation is just that, speculation. Although it makes sense to us as comic book fans and readers, the movies often go in new directions and weave stories we couldn’t have possibly seen coming.
Morbius in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe
After watching the Morbius trailer, released today, I have so many theories and so many questions. I won’t add to the rumor mill but I’ll ask my questions. The first is the obvious, WHAT timeline/world/reality are we in? The Daily Bugle news article mentions Black Cat and Rhino by name. Black Cat, the character, hasn’t been introduced in any Spider-Man film, but we did meet a young Felicia Hardy in the 2014 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 film, played by Felicity Jones. This film also gave us the mechanically enhanced Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti.
Second question: WHAT Spider-Man is depicted on the New York City street wall with the word “murderer” spray painted across it? That definitely looks like Toby Maguire’s old Spider-Man suit.
Third question: WHEN does this take place? There’s a quick San Francisco reference in the trailer and that HAS TO BE a reference to Venom, right?
Then the OMG moment of seeing Michael Keaton, our MCU and current timeline/reality, Vulture. MIND BLOWN!
The new movie is out in January, which is not too far away. I’m hoping that as we get closer to December and the release of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, more clarity is given to the Spiderverse and the future role of all the above mentioned characters, especially our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. In closing, all I have to say is, if Tom Holland doesn’t continue to play Peter Parker, we riot! Face forward, true believers!
