I’ll admit it, I have never read a Shang-Chi comic book. It’s not that I wouldn’t because I love reading new stories, it’s just the two of us have never crossed paths.
My first real introduction to the character was in 2012 during the Marvel NOW! relaunch of comics. Shang Chi joins the Avengers and the INFINITY story line, in which the Avengers join the Galactic Council to fight against the Builders and their crusade against all life in the universe.
You know, a slow day for heroes like the Avengers.
Since this most visible presence, the character has popped up randomly in story arcs such as SECRET EMPIRE, Domino’s limited series and WAR OF REALMS.
Most recently I was routing for the character to take up hosting duties for The Phoenix Force. Shang was one of the Avengers put on trial by the cosmic entity to be its new host in ENTER THE PHOENIX. I thought it made sense for the character to be the host and it would be cool to see a male character wield that power. It didn’t happen and I’m a little bummed by it.
The movie was incredible. It was a visual masterpiece and I mean it. The choreography behind the gift scenes and genuine care for martial arts was impeccable. Simu Liu, welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! His portrayal of the character was everything we never knew we needed.
If you haven’t seen the movie in theaters, it will be streaming on Disney+ on November 12th. I know we will defiantly be watching it again, and again.
